FULL VERDICT — Dr. Conrad Murray: Guilty in Michael Jackson Manslaughter Case
Dr. Conrad Murray has been found guilty in his manslaughter trial.

Conrad Murray is charged with the involuntary manslaughter of Michael Jackson and faced a maximum sentence of four years in prison and the loss of his medical license.

Prosecutors have called a leading expert on the anesthetic propofol to testify against the doctor charged in Michael Jackson’s death.

Dr. Steven Shafer is expected to be the final prosecution witness in the case against Dr. Conrad Murray. Prosecutors are expected to rest their case next week after Shafer’s testimony concludes.

Shafer helped craft guidelines for appropriate propofol dosing for sedation.

Murray told police he was using the anesthetic to help Jackson sleep, which other doctors have testified was a gross deviation from the standard of care.

Defense attorneys are expected to rely on a colleague of Shafer to offer a counter-argument.

Attorneys for the doctor charged in Michael Jackson’s death say the defense is dropping its claim that the superstar swallowed a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol.

Lawyer J. Michael Flanagan said Wednesday that a study commissioned by the defense showed any effect from swallowing propofol would be trivial.

Deputy District Attorney David Walgren and Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor appeared surprised by the disclosure, which was not made in front of jurors.

Lead defense attorney Ed Chernoff said during opening statements on Sept. 27 that his team would try to show that Jackson gave himself the fatal dose of propofol.

An expert cardiologist for the California Medical Board testified on Wednesday (October 12) that Dr. Conrad Murray deviated from standard practices in his care of Michael Jackson by administering the singer the anesthetic propofol. Dr. Alon Steinberg reviewed the police interview with Murray that took place days after Jackson’s death, and made a judgment of the standards of care based on Murray’s own words. Steinberg determined, in his opinion, that there were six separate and distinct deviations of standard of care, each one amounting to gross negligence.

Dr. Alon Steinberg, cardiologist, saying : “All those deviations — giving propofol, giving propofol in an unmonitored setting without personnel, without appropriate monitoring, without appropriate equipment, not being prepared, not doing, appropriately reacting to arrest, not calling 911 on a timely fashion, all directly impacted his life, because if these deviations had not happened, Mr. Jackson could have been alive.” Steinberg also said that Murray should not have given Jackson chest compressions because his heart was still beating, and that Murray did not adequately chart Jackson’s vitals.

Dr. Conrad Murray told police … he had no clue what medications Michael Jackson had been prescribed by other doctors — and although he knew it was going on … Murray says MJ never told him he was seeing other doctors.

In the police interview from June 27th 2009 — two days after MJ died — Murray cites Dr. Arnold Klein as one doctor who regularly prescribed MJ drugs behind Murray’s back.

According to Murray, MJ’s production team often complained about the singer’s visits to Klein — insisting Michael’s worst days on set were after he had been to Dr. Klein’s office … about three times a week.

During the taped interview — played in court today — Murray told police … “When [Michael] came back [from Klein's office], he was basically wasted and required 24 hours for recovery.”

Murray claims the only evidence of doctor-shopping he saw was a smattering of prescription pill bottles by the singer’s bedside, bearing other doctors’ names.

But Murray insists … Michael never spoke about it.

A medical examiner, striking a major blow to the defense of Michael Jackson’s doctor, said Tuesday it is unreasonable to believe Jackson could have given himself a fatal dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol.

Dr. Christopher Rogers, who conducted the autopsy on Jackson, testified it was more likely that Dr. Conrad Murray overdosed the singer when he incorrectly estimated how much of the drug he was giving Jackson to induce sleep.

Rogers said Murray had no precision dosing device on hand in the bedroom of Jackson’s rented mansion.

“The circumstances, from my point of view, do not support self-administration of propofol,” said Rogers, chief of forensic medicine in the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Rogers analyzed two possible scenarios for Jackson’s death. The first was the defense theory that while Murray stepped away to go to the bathroom, Jackson gave himself an extra dose of the drug he called his “milk.”

“In order for Mr. Jackson to have administered the propofol to himself, you would have to assume he woke up and although he was under the influence of … propofol and other sedatives, he was somehow able to administer propofol to himself,” Rogers testified.

“Then he stops breathing and all of this takes place in a two-minute period of time,” Rogers said. “To me, that scenario seems less reasonable.”

“Less reasonable than what?” asked Deputy District Attorney David Walgren.

“The alternate scenario would be in order to keep Mr. Jackson asleep, the doctor would have to give him a little bit every hour, two or three tablespoons an hour,” Rogers said, noting that propofol is a short-acting drug that wears off quickly.

“We did not find any precision dosing device, so the doctor would be estimating how much he was giving,” the medical examiner said.

Murray told police he gave Jackson only 25 milligrams of the drug, a very small dose that usually would have kept him asleep for no more than five minutes.

Rogers said he examined evidence found in Jackson’s bedroom and noted there was an empty 100 milliliter bottle of propofol.

Rogers said the cause of death was “acute propofol intoxication and the contributing condition was the benzodiazepine effect.”

Two sedatives from that drug group — lorazepam and midazolam — were found in Jackson’s system after he died.

Rogers said he considered a number of factors in ruling the death a homicide. Among them were Murray’s statements to police and the lack of sophisticated medical equipment in Jackson’s bedroom, where the superstar had been receiving the anesthetic.

He said there was no EKG monitor, no resuscitation equipment and no precision dosing device present in the room.

Rogers also testified it would be inappropriate to use propofol outside a hospital or medical clinic.

Walgren illustrated testimony about the autopsy by showing a stark photograph of the singer’s body on an examining table with his genitals covered. He appeared thin but not emaciated. The doctor said he was 5 feet 9 inches and weighed 136 pounds.

“I believe he was healthier than the average person his age,” Rogers said, explaining Jackson had no fatty buildup in his arteries common to people his age.

Michael Jackson’s three children have joined thousands of the late pop star’s fans for a memorial concert at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

Prince Michael, 14, Paris, 13, and Prince Michael II, nine, watched acts including Christina Aguilera, Smokey Robinson, Leona Lewis and boy band JLS.

They took to the stage dressed in outfits reflecting Jackson’s career and were greeted by rapturous applause.

The Michael Forever gig honoured the star who died in 2009, aged 50.

Jackson’s three children introduced Beyonce’s performance, with his youngest looking stunned by the noise and lights, but the elder two seeming at ease on stage.

Paris told the audience: “We’re very happy to be here on this special night to honour our father.”

Beyonce, who wore her hair in a Jackson Five-style afro, played one of the group’s hits, Where You Are, saying it was the first song she had performed with her former group Destiny’s Child.

Michael Jackson’s brothers, Tito, Marlon and Jackie, performed at the event, which was hosted by actor Jamie Foxx and presenter Fearne Cotton.

Michael Jackson’s sister, La Toya, came out of retirement to perform.

“I have put musical performance behind me for roughly two decades,” she said.

“But there will never be another magical moment such as this to celebrate Michael with his fans to perpetuate the importance of his legacy.

“I am honoured to share the stage with the incredible performers in this line-up, and I’m certain nothing would make my brother smile bigger or brighter than this tribute concert.”

However, not all the Jackson family were behind the concert.

Two other siblings, Jermaine and Randy Jackson, said the concert was “inappropriate” and “ill-timed” because it was held during the criminal trial of Conrad Murray, the doctor charged with involuntary manslaughter over the star’s death in June 2009.

Jackson’s sister Janet Jackson also decided not to attend.

Marlon Jackson said he respected their decision and added: “Each one of us grieves differently. We want to celebrate the positive side of his life, the positive things that he did.”

‘Celebrating the music’

R&B star Ne-Yo, who gave a rendition of Billie Jean, said: “It’s not about the controversy. It’s not about the trial. It’s not about his death. It’s about celebrating his life. It’s about celebrating his music.”

Michael Jackson fan Helen Rees-Smith, from Blackwood, in Caerphilly county, was at the concert.

“It’s a chance to remember what a great talent he was and to show his family that the memory lives on,” she said.

Paul King, one of the organisers, said there had been a slow start to ticket sales, but added: “All of a sudden this week it exploded and we were selling 1,000 tickets an hour yesterday.” The show was expected to have sold out.

Chart-toppers Black Eyed Peas withdrew from the line-up of the Michael Forever concert last week.

The tape continues — Dr. Conrad Murray‘s explosive 2-hour interview with police on June 27th, 2009 … two days after Michael Jackson died.

* Murray told detectives the children “cried and cried and cried” when he broke the news that MJ died.
* Paris said, “Dr. Murray, you said you save a lot of patients. You know, You save a lot of people with heart attacks, and  you couldn’t save my dad,” Murray told investigators. ‘I know you tried your best, but I’m really sad. You know, I will wake up in the  morning and I won’t be able to see my daddy.”
* Murray said the children insisted on seeing MJ’s. While MJ’s body was being prepared for viewing, the rest of the family began trickling in.
* At a particularly emotional moment, Murray recounts how he held Katherine’s hand when a member of the family asked, “Do you know why he died.” Murray said, No.
* According to Murray, Joe Jackson never showed up to the hospital.
* At around 4:30 pm Murray said he walked over to a different wing of the hospital to help the family lawyers draft a press release. This could explain why hospital surveillance cameras caught Murray leaving the emergency lobby two hours after the singer was pronounced dead.
